Biography
Bohdana Makarenko is a Ukrainian contemporary ceramic artist, based in Shanghai. Her work stands in between nature and human-made, purity and mystique, light and darkness. The materials she uses are organic, the forms inspired by flora & fauna. Her main mediums are clay and minerals. The shapes are raw and undefined. She cherishes an appreciation for broken and imperfect over smooth and neat as it closely resonates with her worldview. She attempts to widen our perception of divinity, to point out a transforming backdrop that constantly seeks to manifest itself in our daily lives and get embodi-ment in its unique shape
Having lived in Kyiv, New York, lstanbul, and Beijing, combined with her involvement in Ukraine’s fight for freedom, each of her pieces is a crystallized form of themulticulturalinspirations and emotionsshe has absorbed and processed.
The design of her objects revealed itself naturally, like an improvised dance choreographed from inside, created in the process of the making. Each of the pieces is one-of-a-kind and possesses its own personality and identity.
