Biography

Han Chiao

(b. Taiwan, lives and works in Paris)

Han Chiao is a Taiwanese artist based in Paris whose ceramic sculptures evoke a visceral tension between tenderness and violence, history and instinct, control and collapse. Trained as a photographer at RMIT in Melbourne and formerly active in the world of fashion imagery, she eventually turned to clay as a more physical, intimate form of expression. Her practice is rooted in wheel-thrown vessels—classical shapes that are then stretched, scarred, fused, and altered while still malleable, resulting in forms that echo ritual objects, anatomical curves, deep-sea fauna, or thorned botanicals.

Drawing from the dual legacies of Chinese antiquity and modern emotional experience, her works are at once vessels and bodies—containers of memory, rupture, resistance. Glazed in rich, dark enamels and sometimes marked with visible trauma or repair, they carry the residue of both care and conflict.

Her sculptural language is deeply informed by embodiment, not only in the vessel’s allusion to the human form, but in the very act of making: a choreographed process between body, clay, and breath. Music plays a central role—nocturnes, romantic fragments, or the slow, meditative structures of Morton Feldman—seeping into the rhythm of her hands. Photography, once a career and now a parallel voice, remains integral in how she sees and captures the skin of things.

She has exhibited in Europe, Asia, and the United States, including solo shows at Sebastien Bertrand Gallery (Geneva) and Guild Gallery (New York), and continues to explore the fragile, thorned territory where vulnerability becomes power.
